Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja
Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja real
estate provides an opportunity to own property in an up-and-coming historic
district in a city receiving world attention for providing the highest quality
of life in Latin
America.
Ciudad Vieja is an 8 by 14 block neighborhood on a peninsula that was once the
original walled Citadel of Montevideo. Ciudad Vieja real estate opportunities
include a variety of building architecture from Montevideo’s colonial period to
more recent construction on the peninsulas south shore.
Once abandoned, much of Ciudad Vieja is undergoing renovation, with the restored
areas becoming the home of Montevideo’s best restaurants, nightclubs, and most
interesting shops. Apartments in Ciudad Vieja are starting to become popular
with foreigners and young Uruguayan professionals who want to be close to the
city’s cultural and social opportunities. With Ciudad Vieja’s ongoing
restoration it has become Montevideo’s cultural, entertainment, and educational
center, as well as the city’s main financial district. The Port of Montevideo is
on Ciudad Vieja’s north shore.
Over time Montevideo has grown to a city of 1.4 million, and Ciudad Vieja is now
a neighborhood within Montevideo. Ciudad Vieja is known for its historic
architecture, narrow streets, monuments, and town squares.
Mercer Human Resource Consulting ranks Montevideo as having the highest
standard of living in Latin America. It is also said to be one of the safest 30
cities in the world. (With that said, there is some purse snatching and camera
grabbing, so practice the same level of caution you would in any large city)
Food, Shopping, and Entertainment
Everything in Ciudad Vieja is close, and one can spend the day on foot exploring
the
community’s
historic buildings, many museums, cathedrals, antique shops, clothing stores,
and street market (on Saturday). The Mercado del Puerto (the market of the port)
is a lively center with some of Montevideo’s finest restaurants along with
street musicians and entertainers. Ciudad Vieja provides close access to
Montevideo’s ballet, symphony, and theater as well as an active Tango community.
Ciudad Vieja is also known for having Montevideo’s most active nightlife that
doesn’t stop until the sun comes up.
